Syzygium brongniartii is an endemic shrub or big tree of New Caledonia with a large distribution in Grande Terre. This species is common and it is found in dense humid forest on ultramafic and volcano sedimentary substrates up to 1,000 m asl. This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 7,540 km² and a minimum area of occupancy (AOO) of 144 km², but it does not appear to be significantly threatened at the moment. Therefore, S. brongniartiiis assessed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


S. brongniartii is endemic to New Caledonia and it has a large distribution in Grande Terre.

Population


Population size is unknown but based on field observations, it is a common species.

Habitat


S. brongniartii occurs in dense humid forest on ultramafic and volcano sedimentary substrates up to 1,000 m asl.

Threats


This species does not seem to be threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted by fires, myrtle rust (Austropuccinia psidii) at Pic du grand Kaori and mining activities at Goro.

Conservation


S. brongniartii is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in several protected areas: Foret Nord, Rivière bleue, Montagne des sources, Pic du grand Kaori, Forêt de Saille, Parc des Grandes Fougères and Massif du Kouakoué.
