Basselinia glabrata is an endemic solitary, subcanopy to emergent tree palm, located in north-eastern part of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. Basselinia glabrata occurs in humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate from 10-1,200 m asl. Main identified threats are linked to habitat damage by bushfire and wild pigs and seeds destruction by rats. With an area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) respectively equal to 80 km² and 631 km² and a number of locations close to 10, Basselinia glabrata is considered Vulnerable (VU) B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) with a decline of habitat quality and number of mature individuals.

Geographical area


Basselinia glabrata is an endemic palm tree of New Caledonia that is distributed in northeast in north-eastern part of Grande Terre in New Caledonia.

Population


Population size is unknown but field surveys report that the population was not abundant. The number of subpopulations is estimated to be close to ten.

Habitat


Basselinia glabrata occurs on volcano-sedimentary substrate from 10-1200 m asl.

Threats


Main identified threats are linked to habitat damage by bushfire and wild pigs and seeds destruction by rats.

Conservation


Basselinia glabrata is protected by legislation in Province Nord and it occurs in one protected area: Mont Panié. Prospection on this species on the southern massifs (Mt.Panié and Roches Ouaième) is highly recommended.
