Basselini favieri is a solitary, subcanopy to canopy endemic tree palm of New Caledonia restricted to the east slope of Mt. Panié in the north-eastern part of Grande Terre, from Mont Panié to Ponandou. B. favieri occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate from 300-1,000 m asl. Main identified threats are linked to seeds destruction by rats and habitat damage by wild pigs. With an area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are equal to 20 and 114 km² with two localities and considering the low regeneration, B.favieri is considered Endangered (EN) B1ab (iii,v)+ 2ab(iii,v) with a decline of habitat quality and number of mature individuals.

Geographical area

Basselini favieri is an endemic palm tree of New Caledonia, where it is known from two subpopulations that are restricted to the easthern part of Grande Terre (Mont Panié and Ponandou).

Population

The population estimation is unknown but field surveys indicate a locally abundant population, gregarious with low regeneration. The number of subpopulations is estimated to two.

Habitat

Basselinia faviery occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate from 300-1,000 m asl.

Threats

Main identified threats are linked to seeds destruction by rats and habitat damage by wild pigs.

Conservation

Basselinia favieri is protected by legislation in Province Nord and it occurs in one protected area: Mont Panié. Prospection in Ponandou and Massif des Lèvres is highly recommended to better evaluate its conservation status and it is also recommended to list the species in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). This species would benefit from ex-situ and in-situ emergency conservation actions as well as invasive species control.
