Basselinia velutina is an endemic solitary subcanopy to mostly emergent tree palm, that is widespread but scattered distribution and localized in humid forests from northeast to south central of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. Basselinia velutina occurs in humid forest on soils derived mostly from schistose rocks from 650- 1,400m asl. The size of the population is unknown but observations on the field show that the population is abundant with a good regeneration. The main impacts identified comes from bushfires and invasive species habitat damage by wild pigs). Therefore Basselinia velutina is considered Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) with a decline of habitat quality and a number of locations close to 10.
