Kentiopsis piersoniorum is an endemic solitary, emergent, gregarious, tree palm that is restricted to a limited area on the east slope of Mt. Panié in northeast Grande Terre in New Caledonia. Kentipsis piersoniorum occurs in humid forest on soil derived from schistose rocks from 500-600 m asl. There is only one population with observed regeneration, but population size is unknown. With an area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) both equal to 8 km² with only one population and considering that this species does not seem globally threatened, Kentiopsis piersoniorum is considered Vulnerable (VU) according criteria D2.

Geographical area

Kentiopsis piersoniorum is an endemic palm tree of New Caledonia, where it is known from only one subpopulation, restricted to a limited area on the east slope of Mt. Panié in northeast Grande Terre in New Caledonia.

Population

There is only one population but its size is unknown. Natural regeneration has been observed (JP Canel comm. pers.).

Habitat

Kentiopsis piersoniorum occurs in humid forest on soil derived from schistose rocks from 500-600 m asl.

Threats

This species does not seem globally threatened. Potential threats that could impact the population of Kentiopsis piersoniorum are seeds destruction by rats and habitat damage by wild pigs.

Conservation

Kentiopsis piersoniorum is protected by legislation by the Province Nord and its population occurs in one protected area: Mont panié. However, prospection on this species at Mont panié is urgent to determine the size of the population and better understand potential threats. Its listing in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) is recommended.
