Cyphokentia cerifera is an endemic solitary, understory to emergent tree palm, that has a disjointed distribution in northeast Grande Terre in New Caledonia. It occurs in dense humid forest on soils derived from schistose rocks where it is often an emergent tree in short, shrubby vegetation or low mountain forest, from 50-600 m asl. Population size is unknown but observation fields noted the local abundance of the population with natural regeneration. The speces is not globally threatened. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being respectively estimated to 44 and 880 km² with a number of locations close to ten, Cyphokentia cerifera is considered Near Threatened (NT) close to Vulnerable (VU) B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) with a decline of the quality of habitat.

Geographical area

Cyphokentia cerifera is an endemic palm tree, that has a disjointed distribution in northeast Grande Terre in New Caledonia.

Population

Population size is unknown but observation fields noted the local abundance of the population with natural regeneration.

Habitat

Cyphokentia cerifera occurs in dense humid forest on soils derived from schistose rocks where it is often an emergent tree in short, shrubby vegetation or low mountain forest, from 50-60 m asl.

Threats

This species does not seem globally threatened. The potential impacts identified comes from invasive species: seeds destruction by rats, seedlings destruction and habitat damage by rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and wild pigs as well as habitat damage linked to uncontrolled bushfires.

Conservation

Cyphokentia cerifera is protected by legislation in Province Nord and it occurs in one protected area: Mont Panié.
