Red List Status -Endangered (EN) , assessed in 09/06/2017
Protected species -in Northern Province , in Northern Province
Pandanus lacuum is an endemic tree of New Caledonia, with a discontinious distribution at Thio and the southern part of Grande Terre. P. lacuum occurs in humid forest on ultramafic soils from 20 to 400 m asl. Its area of occupancy (AOO) is equal to 96 km² for an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 737 km² and an estimation of five locations. The combined threats of fire and the major threat of mining activities, allows us to infer a continuous decline of AOO, EOO, quality of habitat, number of locations and number of mature individuals. Using criteria B, P. lacuum qualifies for Endangered (EN) B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v).
Pandanus lacuum is an endemic tree of New Caledonia, with a discontinious distribution at Thio and the southern part of Grande Terre.
Population size is unknown.
P. lacuum occurs in humid forest on ultramafic soils from 20 to 400 m asl.
The main threats identified are fire and on-going mining activities of Goro (Vale NC).
Pandanus lacuum is protected by legislation in Province Nord and Province Sud and it occurs in two protected areas: Pic du Pin and Barrage de Yaté. This species is part of a rescue programme (Rare species conservation plan) implemented by the mining actor Vale NC where some of them have been planted in Parc Provincial de la Rivière Bleu and N'Dua botanical reserve. It is recommended to carry on efforts to save this species i.e. ex-situ conservation, population monitoring and protection.
