Syzygium multipetalum is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia restricted to the Massif du Sud in the Grande Terre. This species is common and abundant and it occurs in dense humid forest, riparian vegetation and shrubland on ultramafic rocks, up to 550 m asl. Despite having an area of occupancy (AOO) and an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 256 and 3,389 km² respectively, S. multipetalum is considered to be a common species in New Caledonia. It is not thought to approach the conditions for listing as threatened under any criterion and is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
S. multipetalum is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the Massif du Sud in the Grande Terre, from Goro to Canala.
Population
Population size is unknown but field observations show it is a common and abondant species.
Habitat
S. multipetalum occurs in dense humid forest, riparian vegetation and shrubland on ultramafic rocks, up to 550 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem to be threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires and mining activities at Nakéty and Goro.
Conservation
S. multipetalumm is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in several protected areas: Montagne des sources, Rivière bleue, Massif du Kouakoué, la Dumbéa, Forêt cachée, Barrage de Yaté, Haute Yaté, Pic du grand Kaori and Foret Nord.
