Cloezia aquarum is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the south of Grande Terre. This species is found in shrubland and riverine vegetation on ultramafic substrate up to 700 m asl. Known from 6 locations, its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated to be 396 and 48 km², respectively. The main threats to this species are recurrent bushfires and potentially mining activities. Therefore, C. aquarum is listed as Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v).

Geographical area


C. aquarum is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the south of Grande Terre, from Kuebini to Ouinné river.

Population


Population size is unknown.

Habitat


C. aquarum occurs in more or less open shrubland and riverine vegetation on ultramafic substrate up to 700 m asl.

Threats


The main threats to this species are uncontrolled bushfires and potentially mining activities (Goro, Vale), causing habitat degradation.

Conservation


C. aquarum is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia, but it occurs in three protected areas: Rivière Bleue, Chutes de la Madeleine, Haute Yaté. It is recommended to inform DSCGR (government department overseeing firefighting actions) on the presence of the species in the concerned areas. It is also suggested to promote its growing in nurseries and use in green space planning, since it is quite easy to cultivate.
