Elaeocarpus hortensis var. neocaledonica is an endemic tree from New Caledonia, where it is the sole representative of the species. Under current delimitation, it has a scattered distribution across Grande Terre and the Isle of Pines (île des Pins). It occurs in low altitude forest on volcano-sedimentary, ultramafic and even calcareous substrate up to 400 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 6,197 and 48 km², respectively. Some subpopulations are impacted by bushfires, but the taxon doesn't appear to be directly threatened at the moment. However, taxonomic issues remain with the variety and the species. Therefore, E. hortensis var. neocaledonica is listed as Data Deficient (DD).

E. hortensis var. neocaledonica is endemic to New Caledonia, where it has a scattered distribution across Grande Terre, from Kuébini (Yaté) to Ouaté (Pouembout), and the Isle of Pines (île des Pins)

Population size is unknown.
Habitat
E. hortensis var. neocaledonica occurs in low altitude forest on volcano-sedimentary, ultramafic and even calcareous substrate up to 400 m asl.
Threats
Some subpopulations are impacted by bushfires, but the taxon does not appear to be directly threatened at the moment.
Conservation
This taxon is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in one protected area: Forêt de Saille. However, taxonomic issues remain for the variety and the species, so studies are recommended to remove remaining doubts in the brachypodus - comptonii - hortensis species group.
