This shrub grows mostly on rocky calcareous coastlines or islets. Principal threats include invasive plants and animals (goats), which have almost led the Lifou station to disappear. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) in New Caledonia are 1,163 and 20 km², respectively, and the population is estimated to be less than 250 mature individuals. Therefore, S. coccinea subsp. coccinea is locally listed as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v);D
