Red List Status -Critically Endangered (CR) , assessed in 09/12/2016
Protected species -in Northern Province
Polyscias sp. nov. 'nitida' is an endemic shrub found in the central part of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. It is found in low altitude mesophilous forest on ultramafic substrates. The main threats impacting this species come from habitat degradation caused by invasive species (Rusa Deer, Rusa timorensis) and bushfires. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are both estimated to be 12 km² while the number of location is estimated to be one as Rusa Deer might impact all the individuals. Polyscias sp. nov. 'nitida' is therefore assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) with criterion B1ab(iii) with a continuing decline of habitat quality.
Polyscias sp. nov. 'nitida' is an endemic shrub found in the central part of Grande Terre in New Caledonia (Téné and Saraméa; although the population at Saraméa may be extinct, and is not mapped here).
Population size is unknown. This species is known from 2 subpopulations. although recent prospection efforts did not relocate the Sarraméa population and it may be extinct. This species does not seem abundant.
It is found in low altitude (20-160 m asl) mesophilous forest on ultramafic substrate.
The main threats impacting this species come from habitat degradation caused by invasive species (Rusa Deer, Rusa timorensis) and bushfires.
This species is not protected by legislation and it does not occur in any protected area. It is recommended to continue prospections, to carry ex-situ and in-situ conservation efforts, in particular: seeds banking, ensuring the follow-up of known sub-populations and preserving viable populations on fenced perimeters.
