Gonatostylis bougainvillei is an endemic terrestrial orchid of New Caledonia, widespread in Grande Terre, from Kaala in the north to col de Yaté in the south of Grande Terre. It occurs in humid forest and shrubland at an altitudinal range 300-1,200 m asl. Due to its distrbution on intensive mining areas, a continuous decline of G. bougainvillei and its habitat quality is estimated. Total population size is estimated to be fewer than 10,000 mature individuals for a sub-population size fewer than 1,000 mature individuals. Using criteria C, G. bougainvillei qualifies as Vulnerable (VU) C2a(i).

Main threats to Gonatostylis bougainvillei is mining activities some subpopulations may be affected: Michel 38 (SMT), Koniambo (KNS), Kopeto (SLN) or bushfires (Boulinda).
Conservation
Protected by legislation, this species is found in one protected area : Mont Mou.
