Described as an endemic orchid of New Caledonia, Dendrobium petrophilum has never been observed and collected since the first and unique collection made by Däniker in 1925. On the basis of botanical description (type destroyed during second world war), D. petrophilum has never been found again. From Flore des Orchidacées of N. Hallé , material of Däniker's collection was poor and needed to be compare with D. oppositifolium. Pending a taxonomic study on this point, D. petrophilum qualifies as Data Deficient.

D. petrophilum is protected by legislation in Province Nord and Province Sud. A taxonomic study on D. petrophilum and D. oppositifolium is needed to confirm existence of D. petrophilum.
