This liana or upright shrub, sometimes a climber, grows in shrubland on ultramafic substrate between up to 800 m asl. Known from five locations, its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated to be 569 km² and 28 km², respectively. The main threat is uncontrolled bushfires. Therefore, A. kaalaensis is listed as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v).

Geographical area

A. kaalaensis is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted in the northwestern massifs of Grande Terre in New Caledonia, from Pouembout to the north of Koumac.

Population size is unknown.

A. kaalaensis grows in shrubland on ultramafic substrate between 10 and 800 m asl.

The main threat is posed by uncontrolled bushfires, thay may have caused the loss of formerly known subpopulations.

A. kaalaensis is protected by legislation in Province Nord, but does not occur in any protected areas. This species would benefit from ex situ and in situ emergency conservation actions. It is recommended to monitor and preserve known populations in delimited areas of the mining site, and to inform the local authority responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort about the presence of the species in the concerned areas. It would also be advised to run multiplication tests in order to assist future planting operations. Finally, prospection of the formerly known subpopulations (Siounda, Tiéta, Oundjo, Pinjen et Tiaoué) are urgently needed to confirm the presence of the species and better estimate the size and the state of the population.
