Elaeocarpus dognyensis is an endemic shrub or small tree from New Caledonia, growing up to 6 to 10 m high, widely distributed across the Grande Terre, from la Madeleine to Mandjélia. It occurs in dense humid forest and forest edges on ultramafic or volcano-sedimentary substrate at an altitude range of 150 and 1,600 m asl. Some subpopulations are impacted by bushfires, invasive species (Rusa timorensis and Sus scrofa) and mining activities but globally the species is not threatened. Despite having an Area of Occupancy (AOO) and an Extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 208 and 8,712 km² respectively, Elaeocarpus dognyensis is therefore listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area

Elaeocarpus dognyensis is endemic to New Caledonia with a wide distribution across the Grande Terre, from la Madeleine to Mandjélia.

Population

Population size is unknown. Field observations indicate a common species.

Habitat

Elaeocarpus dognyensis occurs in dense humid forest and forest edges on ultramafic or volcano-sedimentary soil at an altitude range of 150 and 1,600 m asl.

Threats

Elaeocarpus dognyensis does not seem to be threatened although some subpopulations may be threatened by bushfires, invasive species (Rusa timorensis and Sus scrofa) and mining activities at Tiebaghi.

Conservation

Elaeocarpus dognyensis is protected by legislation in Province Nord and it does occur in numerous protected areas: Haute Dumbéa, Massif du Kouakoué, Pic Ningua, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Mont Panié, Aoupinié, Côte Oubliée, la Dumbéa. The experts note a high variability in this group and it can also contain multiple taxa that may deserve species-level recognition. Taxonomic and genetic studies are needed to confirm or refute these assumptions (to clarify the links with E. toninensis).
