It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary soil from 300 to 1,250 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 6,144 and 108 km², respectively. Some subpopulations are impacted by invasive species or bushfires, but globally the species is not threatened. Therefore, E. ovigerus is listed as Least Concern (LC).
