Elaeocarpus toninensis
Red List Status -
Least Concern (LC) , assessed in 20/11/2020Protected species -
in Northern ProvinceElaeocarpus toninensis is an endemic tree from New Caledonia, growing up to almost 10 m high, wih a scattered distribution across Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary soil at an altitude range of 50 and 600 m asl. Elaeocarpus toninensis does not seem to be threatened although some subpopulations may be threatened by bushfires and invasive species which contribute to the declinde of the habitat quality. Despite having an Area of Occupancy (AOO) and an Extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 48 and 3,876 km² respectively, Elaeocarpus toninensis is therefore listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Elaeocarpus toninensis is endemic to New Caledonia where it has a scattered distribution across Grande Terre.
Population
Population size is unknown.
Habitat
Elaeocarpus toninensis occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary soil at an altitude range of 50 and 600 m asl.
Threats
Elaeocarpus toninensis does not seem to be threatened although some subpopulations may be threatened by bushfires and invasive species.
Conservation
Elaeocarpus toninensis is protected by legislation in Province Nord and it does occur in two protected areas: Aoupinié, Parc des Grandes Fougères. The experts note a high variability in this group and it can also contain multiple taxa that may deserve species-level recognition. Taxonomic and genetic studies are needed to confirm or refute these assumptions (to clarify the links with E. dognyensis).
