Red List Status -

Vulnerable (VU) , assessed in 08/09/2017

Oxera gmelinoides is a slender liana endemic to New Caledonia and restricted to the south of Grande Terre. It is found in dense humid forest and scrubland on ultramafic substrate up to 500 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated to be 1,934 km² and 72km² respectively, and it is known from nine locations. The main threats are bushfires (all subpopulations) and urbanization (Plum only). O. gmelinoides is therefore listed as Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+B2ab(iii,v).

This species is not protected by legislation in Province Nord or Province Sud, but it occurs in two protected areas: Haute Dumbéa and la Dumbéa. This species is cultivated at the IAC (Institut Agronomique de Nouvelle-Calédonie) nursery of Saint-Louis with only a few number of individuals. But in situ emergency conservation actions should be pursued to better protect it. It is recommended to inform the local authority responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort about the presence of the species in the concerned areas. Moreover, it is suggested to promote its growing in nurseries and use in green space planning and raise awareness on this species amongst local stakeholders.
