Oxera sessilifolia is a monocaulous shrub endemic to New Caledonia, which under current taxonomic delimitation is restricted to the north of Grande Terre. It is found in undergrowth forest on soils derived from volcano-sedimentary rocks from 60 to 1,000 m asl. This species seems to have a taxonomic impediment and it seems that a sympatry is observed within Oxera sessilifolia and a putative new taxon in Mandjelia. Without further taxonomic clarification, Oxera sessilifolia is listed as Data Deficient (DD).

Geographical area

O. sessilifolia is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the north of Grande Terre.

Population

Population size is unknown.

Habitat

O. sessilifolia occurs in forest undergrowth on soils derived from volcano-sedimentary rocks from 60 to 1,000 m asl.

Threats

Potential main threats are repeated fires and invasive species, such as feral pigs (Sus scrofa) and Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis), that may affect a majority of individuals and cause some subpopulations to disappear (Les 3 Creeks).

Conservation

This species is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia and does not occur in any protected areas. This species is cultivated at the IAC (Institut Agronomique de Nouvelle-Calédonie) nursery of Saint-Louis with only a few number of individuals. Taxonomic clarification is urgently needed on this probable complex of species in order to be able to assess its extinction risk.
