Critically Endangered (CR) , assessed in 08/11/2022Stigmaphyllon gymnopodum is a liana endemic from New Caledonia. It is only known from Basse Vallée de Thio, on the east coast of Grande Terre. This liana is found in maquis on serpentine substrate at about 100 m asl. The species has not been found since the last collection in 1966. The supposed extinction could have been caused by frequent uncontrolled bushfires in the area. With only one location threatened and supposed extinct, Stigmaphyllon gymnopodum is listed as Critically Endangered Probably Extinct (CR) PE under criteria B1ab (iii,v)+B2ab(iii,v).
Geographical area
Stigmaphyllon gymnopodum is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is only known from from Basse Vallée de Thio, on the east coast of Grande Terre.

Population size is unknown.
Habitat
Stigmaphyllon gymnopodum occurs in maquis on serpentine substrate at about 100 m asl.
Threats
The main threat is posed by uncontrolled bushfires.
Conservation
Stigmaphyllon gymnopodum is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia and it does not occur in any protected areas. In order to confirm the extinction of this species, prospections on Basse Vallée de Thio station are urgently needed. A count of mature individuals will allow to monitor population dynamics and better understand potential threats.
