Red List Status -Endangered (EN) , assessed in 10/09/2015
Protected species -in Northern Province , in Northern Province
Serianthes margaretae is a narrow endemic small tree found in Grande Terre in New Caledonia. This species is known from 2 sub-populations (Koumac-Tiébaghi, Canala). It is found in shrubland on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 5-30 m asl. Main identified threats are linked to habitat degradation by uncontrolled bushfires and rusa rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) (Rusa timorensis). Its extent of occurrence and area of occupancy are equal to 20km² and 207km² while the number of locations are estimated to be 3. Serianthes margaretae is therefore considered Endangered (EN) according to criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v) with a continuing decline of all concerned sub-criteria.
Serianthes margaretae is a narrow endemic small tree found in the northwestern part of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. This species is known from 2 sub-populations (Koumac-Tiébaghi, Canala).
Population size is unknown.
Serianthes margaretae is found in shrubland on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 5-30 m asl.
Main identified threats are linked to habitat damaging by uncontrolled bushfires and rusa deer (Rusa timorensis). Uncontrolled bushfires sweep across New Caledonia each year, especially during the dry season (an average of 20,000 ha of land is burnt each year, with dramatic peaks of 70,000 ha). Introduced in the 1880's, rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) are now perfectly adapted to New Caledonian habitats.
Serianthes genus is protected by legislation in Province Nord, but this species does not occur in any protected area. It is recommended to prospect in order to overcome the few herbarium data available, to ensure the follow-up of sub-populations and to preserve a viable population on delimited perimeters.
