Syzygium propinquum is an endemic subshrub or shrub from New Caledonia restricted to the centrale east of Grande Terre, from Mt. Aoupinié to Mé Ori. It is found in dense humid forest and shrubland on the banks of the creeks on volcano sedimentary soil between 390 and 1,000 m asl. The population size of S. propinquum is unknown. The main threats are bushfires (Gohapin, Creeck Hervouet) and potential drying of the creeks, Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and mining activities. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 2,085 and 45 km², respectively, with ans estimation of 8 locations. Therefore, S. propinquum is listed as Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(ii,iii,v)+2ab(ii,iii,v).
S. propinquum is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the central east of Grande Terre, from Mt. Aoupinié to Mé Ori.
Population size is unknown.
S. propinquum occurs in dense humid forest and shrubland on volcano sedimentary and ultramafic soil between 390 and 1,000 m asl.
The main threats are bushfires, Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and mining activities at Kouaoua that cause habitat degradation.
This species is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in two protected area: Mont Panié and Aoupinié. This species should be included in the regional legislation for a better protection of the species. Furthermore, prospections and collection of herbarium speciemens are recommended to update its distribution and population size.
