Syzygium quadrangulare is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia with a scattered distribution across Grande Terre. This species is not rare and it is found in dense humid forest and shrubland on volcano sedimentary and ultramafic soil from 660 to 1600 m asl. The main threats are posed by bushfires. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 4,793 and 84 km², respectively, wile the number of locations is estimated to be over 10. Therefore, S. quadrangulare is listed as Near Threatened (NT), close to VU under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v).

Population size is unknown.

Habitat


S. quadrangulare occurs in dense humid forest and shrubland on volcano sedimentary and ultramafic soil from 660 to 1,600 m asl.

Threats


The main threats are posed by bushfires.

Conservation


This species is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it occurs in several protected areas: Massif du Kouakoué, la Dumbéa, Mont Mou, Mont Panié, Vallée de la Thy, Pic du Pin, Mont Do, Rivière bleue, Forêt de Saille, Haute Dumbéa, Haute Yaté, Mont Humboldt and Montagne des sources.
