Vulnerable (VU) , assessed in 26/01/2018Syzygium xanthostemifolium is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia restricted to the southern part of Grande Terre, from Mt. Kouaoua to Goro. It is found in dense humid forest on ultramafic soil between 5 and 800 m asl. The population size of S. xanthostemifolium is unknown. The main threats are bushfires that cause habitat degradation. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 3,115 and 32 km², respectively, with an estimation of 7 locations. Therefore, S. xanthostemifolium is listed as Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+B2ab(iii,v).
Geographical area
S. xanthostemifolium is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the southern part of Grande Terre, from Kouaoua to Goro.
Population
Population size is unknown.
Habitat
S. xanthostemifolium occurs in dense humid forest on ultramafic soil between 5 and 800 m asl.
Threats
The main threats are bushfires and invasive species (Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) that cause habitat degradation.
Conservation
This species is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in one protected area: Rivière bleue. This species should be included in the regional legislation for a better protection of the species.
