Psychotria schlechteriana is an endemic shrub or small tree, widespread in Grande Terre from Hienghène (cavaatch, Forêt de wenem) in the North to Yahoué in the South of New Caledonia. It occurs in forest on various substrate at an altitudinal range 0-900 m asl. This species does not seem directly threatened. Psychotria schlechteriana is considered Least Concern (LC).

This species does not seem globally threatened. Some subpopulations may be threatened by mining activities: Goro (VALE).
