Psychotria toninensis is an endemic shrub or tree, widespread in Grande Terre from OuaTilou to Aoupinié in the North of New Caledonia. It occurs in forest and shrubland on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary substrate at an altitudinal range 500-1,250 m asl. This species does not seem directly threatened. Psychotria toninensis is considered Least Concern (LC).

This species does not seem globally threatened. Some subpopulations may be threatened by mining activities: Kopeto (SLN).
