Oxanthera brevipes is a narrow endemic shrub of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. It could be composed by five sub-populations (Belep, Tinip, Koniambo, Tia, Poya). It is found in shrubland on an ultramafic substrate which are areas threatened by mining operations. This taxon is insufficiently collected and not well known. Oxanthera brevipes is therefore assessed as Data Deficient (DD) for taxonomic reasons.

Oxanthera brevipes is found in shrubland on an ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 5-400 m asl.
The main threat is presented by ongoing mining development in Koniambo and bushfires in Belep.
Oxanthera neocaledonica is protected by legislation in Province Nord. The genus Oxanthera should be taxonomically clarified in order to be able to assess the extinction risks of this species. A bibliographic study remain necessary to strengthen knowledge at a regional scale.
