Zygogynum vieillardii is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the southern east coast of Grande Terre. This species is found in humid forest undergrowth and shrubland on ultramafic soil between 450 and 900 m asl. Known from 9 locations, its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are 56 km² and 1,829 km², respectively. Main threats include mining activities, rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and uncontrolled bushfires. Therefore, Z. vieillardii is listed as Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(ii,iii,v)+2ab(ii,iii,v).

Z. vieillardii is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the southern east coast of Grande Terre, from Menazi to Kouakoué.

Population size is unknown.

Habitat


Z. vieillardii occurs in humid forest undergrowth and shrubland on ultramafic soil between 450 and 900 m asl.

Threats


The main threats are rusa deer (Rusa timorensis), uncontrolled busfires and mining activities at Kouaoua SLN).

Conservation


Z. vieillardii is protected by legislation in Province Sud and Province Nord and occurs in one protected area: Barrage de Yaté. This species would benefit from ex situ and in situ emergency conservation actions. It is recommended to monitor and preserve known populations in delimited areas, and to inform the local authority responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort about the presence of the species in the concerned areas. Moreover, it is suggested to raise awareness on this species amongst local stakeholders, so as to promote its growing in nurseries and integrate it in future green space planning.
