Data Deficient (DD) , assessed in 05/04/2018

Baloghia buchholzii is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia, which under current taxonomic delimitation, has a discontinious distribution in the Grande Terre. It is found in dense humid forest on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary substrate, from 150 to 1,250 m asl. Within that complex genus, B. buchholzii seems to have a taxonomic impediment. It could be composed of two distinct species: a new pecies in the north and the southern subpopulation could be merged with Baloghia bureavii. As this species is insufficiently collected and not well known, B. buchholzii is thus assigned as Data Deficient (DD) for taxonomic reasons.

Geographical area

B. buchholzii is endemic to New Caledonia, where under current delimitation, has a large and discontinious distribution in Grande Terre.

Population

Population size is unknown.

Habitat

B. buchholzii seems to occur in dense humid forest on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary substrate, from 150 to 1,250 m asl.

Threats

It was collected in an area potentially impacted by fires, Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis russa), feral pigs (Sus scrofa) and miniing activites (Goro (VALE), Kopeto (SLN)).

Conservation

B. buchholzii is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and does occur in several protected areas: Rivière bleue, Barrage de Yaté, Forêt de Saille, Haute Pourina, Haute Yaté, Montagne des sources, Massif du Kouakoué, Mont Humboldt and Netcha. This species has similar forms with B. bureavii and is probably the same species. Taxonomic clarification is therefore urgently needed on this probable complex of species.
