Red List Status -Endangered (EN) , assessed in 24/10/2017
Protected species -in Southern Province , in Northern Province
Bocquillonia arborea is a small tree endemic to New Caledonia, only known from two localities on Ile des Pins (Gadgi and Wadawu). It occurs in humid forest on calcareous substrate at low altitude. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are both equal to 12 km². Main identified threats include habitat degradation by uncontrolled bushfires, invasive species (Pinus caribea) and human activities (tree logging). This species is therefore listed as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v).
B. arborea is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is found only on Ile des Pins, in two localities 10 kilometers apart (Gadgi and Wadawu).
Two subpopulations have been identified (Gadgi et Wadawu). Total population size is not known, but field observations indicate this species is not very common. Regeneration has been observed despite degradation of the undergrowth.
B. arborea occurs in dense humid forest on calcareous substrate at low altitudes.
The main identified threat is habitat degradation by uncontrolled bushfires, invasive species (Pinus caribea) and human activities (logging).
B. arborea is protected by legislation in Province Sud, but doesn't occur in any protected areas. This species would benefit from ex-situ and in-situ emergency conservation actions. It is proposed that monitoring should occur to ensure the persistence of the known population. To ensure the preservation of a viable population, it is recommended to inform the DSCGR (emergency services) and local Management Committee on the presence of the species in the concerned areas.
