Acropogon calcicolus is an endemic small tree of the central part of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. This species is known from only one population in Poya surroundings. It is found in dry forest on calcareous substrate at an altitude of 50-200 m asl. This species does not seem directly threatened. Its area of occupancy (AOO) being estimated to 12 km², A. calcicolus is proposed as Vulnerable (VU) using criteria D2 and the possibility that invasive species could rapidly drive the species to CR.

Geographical area

Acropogon calcicolus is an endemic small tree of the central part of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. This species is known from only one population in Poya surroundings.

Population

It is only known from one population in Poya. Population size is unknown.

Habitat

This species is found in dry and saxicole forest on calcareous substrate at an altitude of 50-200 m asl.

Threats

This species does not seem directly threatened. Its situation on calcareous cliffs seems to protect it from usual threats (rusa deer (Rusa timorensis), bush fires). Two potential threats have been mentionned (rats impact on seeds, extension of the introduced species Aleurites moluccana).

Conservation

Protected species by legislation in Province Nord and Province Sud, A. calcicolus is however not found in any protected area. It is recommended to follow the potential impact of rats and Aleurites moluccana as it could rapidly move this taxon to the category Critically endangered.
