Pandanus macrocarpus is an endemic shrub of New Caledonia with a scatterred distribution in Grande Terre (south, centre and north-east) and is also found in Loyalty Islands (Lifou and Maré) and îles des Pins. P. macrocarpus occurs in dense humid forests and mangroves on schistose rocks, calcerous and ultramafic rocks at an altitudinal range of 3-350 m asl. P. macrocarpus does not seem directly threatened and is considered Least Concern (LC).

P. macrocarpus is protected by legislation in province Nord. This species is found in numerous protected areas: Rivière bleue, Haute Yaté, Haute Dumbéa, la Dumbéa.
