Basselinia moorei is a monoecious tree palm endemic of New Caledonia, only known from the upper slopes of Mont Panié in the north-eastern part of Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest on schistose rocks at 900-1400 m asl. The threats identified are the destruction of seeds by rats and destruction of habitats by pigs and seed collections. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being both estimated to 4 km², B. moorei is considered Critically Endangered (CR) using criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) with an estimation of one location and a decline of habitat quality and number of individuals.

Basselinia moorei is an endemic palm tree of New Caledonia, only known from the upper slopes of Mt Panié in the northeast of Grand Terre.

Population


The size of the population is unknown but field surveys report a scarce population, with only one population.

Habitat


It occurs in dense humid forest on shistose rocks at 900-1,400 m asl.

Threats


The threats identified are the destruction of seeds by rats and habitat damage by pigs.

Conservation


Basselinia moorei is protected by legislation in Province Nord and it occurs in one protected area: Mont Panié. Prospection at Mont Panié (west side) and Mont Colnett is recommended to update the data. This species would benefit from ex-situ and in-situ emergency conservation actions as well as invasive species control. It is recommended to improve the knowledge of the species (monitoring programs and multiplication tests) and list the species in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
