Red List Status -

Vulnerable (VU) , assessed in 23/01/2015

Plerandra taomensis is an endemic tree of New Caledonia occurring in dense humid montane forest in the northwestern portion of the central chain on ultramafic substrate. There is an evident threat due to the mining activities that impact ultramafic massifs of northwest Grande Terre. Population size and population size reduction cannot be assessed because of a lack of data. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 1,846 km², an area of occupancy (AOO) of 126 km² and 9 estimated locations, none of them occurring within a protected area, along with a continuing decline of the quality of habitat and of the number of mature individuals,Plerandra taomensis is assigned a status of Vulnerable.

Geographical area

Plerandra taomensis is an endemic tree of New Caledonia restricted to the central chain of Grande Terre from Houaïlou to Kaala Gomen.

Population

Population size is unknown. This species occurs in small subpopulations in which mature individuals are not abundant.

Habitat

Plerandra taomensis occurs in dense humid montane forest on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range of 700-1,200 m.

Threats

An important threat to biodiversity in New Caledonia comes from past, present and future mining activities. New Caledonia contains 20-30% of the world's nickel resources. Intense mining activities since the late 19th century generated soil erosion (1.2% of bare ground mapped by SPOT5 in 2007). Based on the distribution of metal-rich soils and site accessibility, these threats are predictable and planned (rise in nickel production from 60,000 to 200,000 tonnes per year between 2013 and 2015). The north-west ultramafic massifs which host Plerandra taomensis are being actively mined.

Conservation

Plerandra taomensis is not protected by local legislation and does not occur in any protected areas.
