Pycnandra intermedia is an edemic shrub up to 2m tall, restricted to the central-southern mountains of Grande Terre in New Caledonia, from Thio to Dzumac. It is found in shrubland on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 10-950 m asl. Ongoing mining activities are the main identified threat. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and area of occurrence (EOO) are respectively estimated to 44 km² and 753 km². Pycnandra intermedia is therefore considered Vulnerable (VU) according to criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+B2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v) with a continuing decline of all sub-criteria.

Population


It is known from ten subpopulations: Thio, Concession Thio 8(SLN), Concession Thio 10 EXT(SLN), Piste du Mont Ninga, Aphrodite Red(thio,SLN),Koungouhaou, Forêt a Kaori, Tontouta Haute vallee, Dzumac-Ouin/Crete, Sentier Dzumac.

Habitat


Pycnandra intermedia is found in shrubland on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 10-950 m asl.

Threats


Some subpopulations may be threatened by ongoing mining activities: Camp des sapins (SLN), Vulcain (SMGM), Plateau (SLN).

Conservation


Unprotected by legislation, this species is found in one protected area : Pic Ningua. Multiplication trial and phenologic follow-up are being conducted (2016) by SLN(Société Le Nickel).
