Pycnandra schmidii is an endemic tree restricted to four locations in Grande Terre: Massif de Tchingou, Poya, Me Maoya, Mé Ori. It is found in dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 900-1,450 m asl. This species does not seem directly threatened. Its area of occupancy (AOO) being estimated to 28 km², Pycnandra schmidii is considered Near Threatened (NT) close to VU D2 because of its reduced number of subpopulations and narrow AOO.

This species does not seem globally threatened and a continuing decline can not be highlighted.
Unprotected by legislation, this species is found in one protected area : Mont Do.
