Pandanus bilinearis is an endemic shrub of New Caledonia, restricted to the north west of Grande Terre (Tiebaghi) and Art Island in Belep. It is found in shrubland and dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate at an altitude range of 200-595 m asl. The main identified threats are linked to habitat quality damage by ongoing mining activities and uncontrolled bushfires. The species has an Area of Occupancy of 8 km², and is severely fragmented. Therefore, P. bilinearis is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) under criterion B2ab(i,ii,iii,v), with a decline of its population, area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) and habitat quality.

Geographical area

Pandanus bilinearis is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the north-west of Grande Terre (Tiebaghi) and île Art (Belep islands).

Population

The whole population size is unknown, but the population of Tiebaghi is estimated to be less than 10 mature individivuals with no regeneration observed.

Habitat

P. bilinearis is found in shrubland and dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate at an altitude range of 200-595 m asl.

Threats

Main identified threats are linked to habitat quality damage by on-going mining activities in Tiebaghi (SLN) and uncontrolled bushfires in Tiebaghi and Belep.

Conservation

This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord and Province Sud, but does not occur in any protected areas. As this species is severely threatened by bushfires, its stations must be included in the maps of the government departmant overseeing the firefighting efforts. This species is grown ex situ at Le vieux village de Tiebaghi (Fleurot comm. pers.). However, this species would benefit from more ex-situ and in-situ emergency conservation actions. It is proposed to ensure the follow-up of known subpopulations, to preserve a viable population on delimited perimeters in Tiebaghi and to conduct prospection around the two subpopulations in order to better estimated its population.
