Oxera sp. nov. "papineaui" is a monocaulous small tree endemic to New Caledonia. It is known from three locations (Bouirou, Néaoua and Katrikoin/Kouaoua) in the center of Grande Terre. It is found in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate between 530 and 600 m asl., and its area of occupancy (AOO) equals 16 km². Population size is unknown. Considering the potential impact of invasive species, mostly feral pigs (Sus scrofa) and rusa deer (Rusa timorensis russa), Oxera sp. nov. "papineaui" is listed as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion D2.

Conservation

Oxera sp. nov. "papineaui" is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia and it does not occur in any protected areas. It is recommended to monitor known populations and inform the local authority responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort on the presence of the species in the concerned areas. Prospection at Boirou, Néaoua and Katrikoin-Kouaoua is also recommended to determine population size and better understand potential threats. Knowledge improvement on the species (multiplication tests) would also be needed for ex situ conservation.
