Red List Status -

Least Concern (LC) , assessed in 19/11/2021

Grevillea rubiginosa, commonly known as "Brosse à dents du sud or Brosse à dents à feuilles rousses", is a shrub or subshrub endemic to New Caledonia. It is restricted to the southern ultramafic massif (Massif du Grand Sud) of the Grande Terre, from the far south of the massif to the upper limit of Dumbéa-Mt. Humboldt-Thio area. There was an observation from Germain at Ile des Pins but it has not been seen since 1874. This species occurs in scrubland on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range of 10 to 1,264 m asl. Some subpopulations may be impacted by mining activities at Goro and Ada massifs and uncontrolled bushfires. However this species is very common and does not seem to be threatened. Therefore with an Area of Occupancy (AOO) and an Extent of Occurrence (EOO) equal to 406 and 2,555 km², respectively, Grevillea rubiginosa is not thought to approach the requirements for listing as threatened. It is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Habitat

This species occurs in scrubland on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range of 10 to 1,264 m asl.

Threats

Some subpopulation may be impacted by uncontrolled bushfires and by mining activities at Goro and Ada massifs. However Grevillea rubiginosa is very common and tends to be a pioneer species, resilient to uncontrolled bushfires and other natural disturbances.

Conservation

Grevillea rubiginosa is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in several protected areas : Mont Humboldt, la Dumbéa, Massif du Kouakoué, Rivière bleue, Vallée de la Thy, Côte Oubliée, Haute Dumbéa, Haute Yaté. It is recommended to realise prospections at Ile des Pins to confirm its presence there.
