Description

Pileus: conical to convex; 11 - 35 mm diameter; scurfy to minutely squamulose; scarletred becoming orange at maturity; margin crenulate.

Stipe: cylindrical; 25- 50 × 1.5–3mm; glabrous, but very finely fibrillose when viewed under a lens;scarlet red becoming orange and often yellow at base.

Gills: arcuate decurrent; distant; white becoming pale yellow with a red edge that turns orange with age.

Flesh: pale yellow.

Spore print: white.

Spores: broadly ellipsoid; 8 - 11 × 7 –8µm.

Notes: this Hygrocybe is unsual, from above it looks very like H cantharellus, but it is easily separated by the red edge to the gills.
