Description
Cap: convex to plano-convex; 50 - 90 mm diameter; squamose with large concentrically arranged squamules, dry; dark grey squamules on a pale grey background; margin appendiculate (hanging over the pores).
Stipe: cylindrical; 60 – 100 × 10 – 20 mm; fibrillose with raised vertical fibres and a few cross fibres at apex giving a reticulate appearance; grey, fibres slightly darker than background.
Pores: adnexed; polygonal; radially elongated, largest next to stipe, smallest at margin; pale grey; bruising dark brown to sepia.

Spore print: violaceous black.

Notes: this grey boldly squamose Bolete is a typical member of the genus Strobilomyces. It is characterised by its very dark spores with a violaceous tinge and the dark staining reaction when the pores are bruised.
