Phyllanthus caudatus is a shrub or small tree of 1-6 m high, endemic of New Caledonia and restricted to the Grand Massif du Sud. This species occurs mainly in undergrowth forests on ultramafic substrates at an altitude range of 5 and 400 m asl. Its habitat is threatened by recurrent bushfires. Its Area of Occupancy (AOO) and Extent of Occurrence (EOO) being respectively estimated to be 84 and 753 km², Phyllanthus caudatus is considered Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) with an estimated decline of all the concerned subcriteria and a number of locations above 10.

Geographical area


Phyllanthus caudatus is endemic of New Caledonia where it is restricted to the Grand Massif du Sud.

Population


Population size is unknown.

Phyllanthus caudatus occurs mainly in undergrowth forests on ultramafic substrates at an altitude range of 5 and 400 m asl.

Threats


Its habitat is threatened by recurrent bushfires.

Conservation


Phyllanthus genus is protected by legislation in Province Nord. Phyllanthus caudatus does occur in 3 protected areas: Forêt Nord, Haute Yaté and Rivière bleue.
