Garnieria spathulaefolia is an endemic shrub or small tree growing up to 10 m high from New caledonia, largely in the ultramafic massifs across the Grande Terre, from the Grand Massif Sud to the north west part with an extension to Mont Monéo. G. spathulaefolia occurs in dense forest and shrubland on ultramafic substrate. Its altitude ranges from 20 to 900 m asl. G. spathulaefolia has an Extent of Occurrence (EOO) equal to 9,117 km² and a minimum Area of Occupancy (AOO) of 268 km², but it does not appear to be threatened at the moment. Therefore, Garnieria spathulaefolia is assessed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Garnieria spathulaefolia is an endemic species from New Caledonia largely distributed across the Grande Terre, from the Grand Massif Sud to the north ouest part with an extension to Mont Monéo at the north east.
Population
Population size is not known but field observations indicate a species not quite abonbondant.
Habitat
Garnieria spathulaefolia occurs in undergrowth forest and shrubland on ultramafic substrates at an altitude range of 20 and 900 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem threatened although some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires and mining activities at Etoile du Nord, Koniambo, Kopeto, Plateau, Nakéty and Goro.
Conservation
Garnieria spathulaefolia is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in several protected areas : Massif du Kouakoué, Haute Pourina, Mont Humboldt, Rivière bleue, Netcha, Barrage de Yaté and Forêt de Saille.
