New material of the small eusuchian crocodylian Mekosuchus inexpectatus is described from Quaternary deposits of the Pindai Caves, New Caledonia, South West Pacific. The new material permits the first detailed investigation of the cranial osteology of this crocodyliform, including a reconstruction of the skull. Comparisons with other species confirm that Mekosuchus is monophyletic, with all species possessing a maxilla that participates in the orbit, a short, deep rostrum, a high alveolar process, palatal fenestrae extending rostrally to a point level with at least the seventh maxillary alveolus and a wide frontal between orbits. In light of the new material, Mekosuchus kalpokasi may need to be considered a junior synonym of M. inexpectatus. The morphology of all three Mekosuchus species suggests that their behaviour and ecology was comparable to that of extant species of Paleosuchus and the African dwarf crocodile, Osteolaemus tetrapsis.
