Convex body, black more or less brilliant

The imagos stridulate.

About 150 species, cosmopolitan, but absent Australia before introduction.

Pronounced sexual dimorphism.

Both sexes collaborate in digging the burrow and its supply; the female remains in the underground chamber until hatching.
