Styphelia pancheri is a very common shrub, endemic to New Caledonia, where it is largely distributed across Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest and scrubland on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary substrate up to 1,000 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 7,175 and 216 km², respectively. Therefore, S. pancheri is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


S. pancheri is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is very common and largely distributed across Grande Terre.

Population


Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate the species is locally abundant.

Habitat


S. pancheri is found in dense humid forest and scrubland on ultramafic and volcano-sedimentary substrate up to 1,000 m asl.

Threats


This species does not seem globally threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted by actual mining activities at Goro (Vale) and Koniambo (KNS) and potential future mining activities at Paéoua and Creek Pernod.

Conservation


S. pancheri is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in numerous protected areas: Mont Do, Haute Yaté, Rivière bleue, Forêt de Saille, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Haute Dumbéa, Chutes de la Madeleine, Vallée de la Thy, Massif de Kouakoué et la Dumbéa. This species should be collected more, and genetic studies are suggested in order to facilitate species identification within this genus.
