Maesa novocaledonica is an endemic liana from New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre. This species also occurs on Ile des Pins, Bélep islands and Loyalty Islands. It is very common and it occurs in various habitats on various substrates up to 1,600 m asl. Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires or mining activities, but globally this species does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 60,379 and 456 km², respectively. Therefore, Maesa novocaledonica is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Maesa novocaledonica is endemic to New Caledonia where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre. This species also occurs on Ile des Pins, Bélep islands and Loyalty Islands.
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is common.
Habitat
This species occurs in various habitats on various substrates up to 1,600 m asl.
Threats
Although some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires or mining activities, this species does not appear to be threatened.
Conservation
Maesa novocaledonica is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it occurs in numerous protected areas: Foret Nord, Aoupinié, Côte Oubliée, Forêt de Saille, Haute Dumbéa, la Dumbéa, Montagne des sources, Mont Mou, Mont Panié, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Rivière bleue, Vallée de la Thy.
