Least Concern (LC) , assessed in 26/01/2018Syzygium austrocaledonicum is an endemic small tree or shrub of New Caledonia largely distributed from the south to the north west of Grande Terre as well as in Belep islands. It occurs in humid forest and shrubland on soils derived from ultramafic and volcano sedimentary rocks from 10-900 m asl. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) respectively equal to 16,848 and 308 km², this species is a common species and does not seem threathened. Therefore, S. austrocaledonicum is considered as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
S. austrocaledonicum is an endemic species of New Caledonia largely distributed from the south to the north west of Grande Terre as well as in Belep islands.
Population
Population size is unknown but based on field observations, it is a common species.
Habitat
S. austrocaledonicum occurs in humid forest and shrubland mostly on soils derived from ultramafic soils. It can also be found on volcano sedimentary rocks from 10-900 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem to be threatened at the moment, although some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires at lower altitudes, invasive species (Rusa timorensis and Sus scrofa) and mining activities at Goro, Kopeto, Cap Bocage and Tiebaghi.
Conservation
S. austrocaledonicum is not protected by legislation in New Caedonia but it does occur in several protected areas: Rivière bleue, Foret Nord, Cap N'dua, Massif du Kouakoué, Pic du grand Kaori, la Dumbéa, Barrage de Yaté and Haute Dumbéa.
