Syzygium macranthum is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia largely distributed in Grande Terre as well as in Belep islands and Ile des Pins. This species is abundant and it occurs in dense humid forest, gallery forest border and transitional forest on volcano sedimentary and ultramafic substrates up to 1,300 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is equal to 16,047 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) 396 km². S. macranthum does not seem globally threatened and therefore is assessed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


S. macranthum is endemic to New Caledonia where it is largely distributed in Grande Terre as well in Belep islands and Ile des Pins.

Population


Population size is unknown but based on field observations, it is a common species.

Habitat


S. macranthum occurs in dense humid forest, gallery forest border and transitional forest on volcano sedimentary, ultramafic substrates up to 1,300 m asl.

Threats


This species does not seem to be threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted by fires and mining activities at Goro, Camp des sapins, Tiebaghi.

Conservation


This species is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in several protected areas: Pic Ningua, Mont Do, Montagne des sources, Barrage de Yaté, Foret Nord, Mont Panié, Aoupinié, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Vallée de la Thy, Massif du Kouakoué and Pic du grand Kaori.
